Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (No. 59 of 1960).

The Act provides for the prevention and protection of animal from cruelty, unnecessary pain, overwork, torture and abuse. It appoints as competent authority the Animal Welfare Board of India. It rules for the experiments conducted on animals and also for those animals performing in circuses and other attractions. It provides for the prohibition of conducting aforesaid experiments and the activities related to performing, as training and exhibition; it authorizes the inspection of all the premises where animals work, eat, rest, perform or are slaughtered in order to avoid any cruelty or abuse. Provisions are included in the text about the religious methods of slaughtering and butchering.
